CPCA estimates China Sept NEV wholesale to rise 22% to 1.5 million

China's new energy vehicle (NEV) wholesale sales continued to grow last month as the market entered its peak season.
In September, China's passenger NEV wholesale sales are estimated at 1.5 million units, up 22 percent year-on-year and up 16 percent month-on-month, according to a report released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
September had 22 working days, the same as the same period last year, providing relatively ample production and sales time for automakers, the CPCA said.
Market activity was stronger this September compared to last year because the 2024 Mid-Autumn Festival fell in September, while the 2025 Mid-Autumn Festival was during the National Day holiday, the CPCA noted.
NEV wholesale sales hit record highs for automakers including Geely, Changan Automobile, Leapmotor (HKG: 9863), Dongfeng, Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV), GWM (HKG: 2333), Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO), SAIC Passenger Vehicle, Arcfox, GAC Toyota, and Changan Mazda.
In August, manufacturers with passenger NEV wholesale sales exceeding 10,000 units accounted for 93.5 percent of the month's total NEV wholesale sales.
Based on September's estimated sales of 1.4 million units for these automakers and last month's sales structure, China's September passenger NEV wholesale sales are projected to reach 1.5 million units, the CPCA said.

In China, NEVs encompass battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles. Detailed figures are expected to be released later this month.
Among major automakers, BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) recorded wholesale NEV sales of 393,060 units, while Geely reached 165,201 units.
Changan's NEV wholesale sales were 97,096 units, SAIC-GM-Wuling recorded 91,419 units, and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) achieved 90,812 units.
