Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) saw robust deliveries in China last month, primarily driven by improved performance of its Model Y SUV (sport utility vehicle).
Model Y retail sales in China reached 51,173 units in September, marking a 6.16 percent year-on-year increase and ending two consecutive months of year-on-year declines, according to data compiled by CnEVPost from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The SUV's September retail sales in China surged 29.84 percent from August's 39,413 units.
This growth was largely driven by the newly launched six-seat Model Y L, propelling Tesla's total September retail sales in China to 71,525 units -- the second-highest this year -- with the year-on-year decline narrowing to 0.93 percent.
The Model Y L was launched in China on August 19 and began deliveries in early September.
The Model 3 continued to underperform compared to last year. The electric sedan recorded 20,352 retail sales in China in September, a 15.19 percent year-on-year decline marking its fifth consecutive month of year-on-year contraction, despite a 14.73 percent increase from August.
From January to September, Tesla's retail sales in China totaled 432,704 units, down 5.97 percent year-on-year.
Model Y retail sales in China from January to September totaled 292,843 units, down 13.27 percent year-on-year; Model 3 sales in China during the same period reached 139,861 units, up 14.12 percent year-on-year.
Tesla operates a factory in Shanghai producing the Model 3 and Model Y, serving both domestic customers and acting as an export hub.
The company exported 8,734 Model Ys from China in September, a 196.07 percent increase year-on-year but a 55.15 percent decrease from August.
From January to September, the SUV saw 85,824 units exported from China, a 25.85 percent year-on-year increase.
Model 3 exports from China totaled 10,553 units in September, down 19.88 percent year-on-year but up 60.75 percent month-on-month.
From January to September, Model 3 exports came in at 87,836 units, a 40.39 percent year-on-year decrease.
