US man sentenced to 30 years and 4 months in prison for cryptocurrency terrorist financing scheme

On May 8, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, a 35-year-old resident of Virginia, USA, was sentenced to 30 years and 4 months in prison for financing the terrorist organization ISIS. Evidence shows that between October 2019 and October 2022, the defendant raised funds through social media and personally drove hundreds of miles to collect cash. He then converted more than US$185,000 into cryptocurrency and transferred it to Turkey, which eventually flowed to ISIS members in Syria. The funds were used to support ISIS militants and rescue imprisoned female members. In December 2024, a federal jury found him guilty on five counts including conspiracy to fund a foreign terrorist organization.
