EU prepares to impose counter-tariffs on 72 billion euros of US goods
According to online reports, according to Xinhua Agency, European Commission Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Shevcovic said on the 14th that if US-European trade negotiations fail, the EU is prepared to impose additional countermeasures on US imports worth 72 billion euros (about US$84 billion). Just as the EU and the United States are working hard to reach a trade agreement, U.S. President Trump announced on the 12th that a 30% tariff will be imposed on EU imports starting from August 1. Ministers of EU member states held a meeting in Brussels on the 14th to discuss how to respond to Trump's latest statement and prepare countermeasures. Danish Foreign Minister Rasmussen, who chaired the meeting, said at a press conference after the meeting that EU member states considered the US tariff threat "absolutely unacceptable." He stressed: "We want to reach a fair agreement. But if we encounter unfair tariffs, we should be prepared to respond."
