BYD recalls 115,783 Tang and Yuan Pro EVs in China
The recalled Tang vehicles have a potential risk of pure electric drive mode failure, while the Yuan Pro faces a risk of water ingress into the power battery.
- BYD is recalling a total of 44,535 units of the 2015 Tang series cars due to the risk of failure in pure electric drive mode.
- 71,248 units of the Yuan Pro are being recalled due to the risk of water ingress into the power battery.
BYD is recalling some vehicles manufactured several years ago in China due to safety hazards stemming from manufacturing issues.
The new energy vehicle (NEV) maker is recalling a total of 115,783 Tang and Yuan Pro electric vehicles (EVs), with production dating back as far as 10 years.
Effective immediately, BYD is recalling 44,535 units of the 2015 Tang series produced between March 28, 2015, and July 28, 2017, according to an announcement published today on China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website.
In some vehicles, component design selection issues may cause abnormal operation of the drive motor controller's active discharge function during use.
In extreme cases, this could cause circuit board burnout, resulting in failure of the vehicle's pure electric drive mode and posing a safety hazard.
The company is also recalling 71,248 Yuan Pro pure electric vehicles produced between February 6, 2021, and August 5, 2022, effective immediately.
Due to manufacturing issues, some vehicles may have improperly installed battery seals, reducing their sealing effectiveness.
If the vehicles are driven through water at high speeds for extended periods, water may enter the power battery, reducing its insulation performance. In extreme cases, this could decrease the power battery's output, posing a safety hazard.
Both the Tang and Yuan Pro are models in BYD's Dynasty series. Currently, the Tang family includes the hybrid Tang DM-i and the pure-electric Tang L EV, while the Yuan Pro is no longer sold in China.
