In August, China's passenger new energy-vehicle (NEV) wholesale sales are estimated at 1.3 million units, up 24 percent year-on-year and up 10 percent month-on-month, according to a report released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

August had 21 working days, one fewer than the same period last year, with some manufacturers taking their summer heat holidays. However, production and sales remained relatively stable in August, CPCA noted.

Geely, Leapmotor (HKG: 9863), Dongfeng, Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV), Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO), Dongfeng Nissan, and GAC Toyota all achieved record-high NEV wholesale sales, the report noted.

CPCA said that strong performance from many smaller automakers also boosted overall NEV sales.

In July, manufacturers with passenger NEV wholesale sales exceeding 10,000 units accounted for 91.7 percent of the month's total NEV wholesale sales.

Based on July's estimated sales of 1.19 million units and last month's sales structure, China's August passenger NEV wholesale sales are projected to reach 1.3 million units, CPCA stated.

From January to August, China's NEV wholesale sales are estimated at 8.93 million units, a 34 percent year-on-year increase, according to CPCA.

In China, NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles. Their specific figures are expected to be released later this month.

Among major automakers' NEV wholesale sales, BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) recorded 371,501 units, Geely 147,347 units, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) 83,192 units, Changan Automobile 75,925 units, and Chery 65,895 units.

Data released yesterday by BYD showed it sold 373,626 NEVs in August, comprising 371,501 passenger NEVs and 2,125 commercial NEVs.
