Japanese media: Shigeru Ishiba's ruling coalition is expected to lose its majority in Senate election
Japan's ruling coalition may lose its majority in the July 20 Senate election, Internet reported that Japan's Asahi Shimbun said on Tuesday, exacerbating the risk of political instability as Japan strives to reach a trade deal with the United States. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner Komeito will likely win about 35 seats in Sunday's election, down from the 50 seats the Liberal Democratic Party must retain to defend its majority. The report was based on telephone and online surveys of voters conducted July 13 and 14, as well as a nationwide survey conducted by the newspaper's reporters. Shigeru Ishiba's government's approval rating fell due to rising costs of living, including soaring prices for Japan's staple food rice. (Jin Shi)
