Nvidia and OpenAI are preparing to unveil a multibillion-dollar investment in the United Kingdom aimed at strengthening the country’s artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to people familiar with the matter. The announcement is expected next week during U.S. President Donald Trump’s state visit to Britain.
The plan involves a partnership with cloud and data center provider Nscale, which is already developing major facilities in the UK. While the details of the investment are still being finalized, the deal could be worth several billion dollars and will form part of a broader package of U.S. corporate commitments to Britain.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are expected to join President Trump on his trip to the UK. Both executives have previously emphasized the importance of expanding AI infrastructure in Europe. Earlier this year, Huang described the UK as an “incredible place to invest,” highlighting what he called its “Goldilocks circumstance” for technology expansion.
Nscale disclosed plans in January for a new UK data center in Loughton, Essex, scheduled to go live in 2026 with 50MW of capacity, expandable to 90MW. The company is planning to spend around $2.5 billion to $3 billion on the project. At London Tech Week, Huang also revealed that Nvidia would partner with Nscale to deploy 10,000 of its Blackwell GPUs in Britain by the end of 2026, a move expected to anchor the upcoming investment package.
The three companies — Nvidia, OpenAI, and Nscale — are already collaborating on “Stargate Norway,” a massive data center project near Narvik in northern Norway. That facility will initially support 230MW of power, with an additional 290MW available for future expansion, and is slated to host 100,000 Nvidia GPUs by 2026. It remains unclear whether the UK project will be branded under the same Stargate umbrella, though OpenAI has previously said the brand would cover all of its future infrastructure projects.
The initiative comes as governments worldwide push to build “sovereign AI” capacity, ensuring that advanced computing infrastructure is located within their borders to reduce dependence on foreign players. The UK government has signed agreements with OpenAI to collaborate on digital infrastructure, underscoring its strategic interest in hosting large-scale AI projects.
If confirmed, the investment would represent one of the largest commitments yet by U.S. AI leaders in Britain and further fuel optimism that the UK can secure a pivotal role in the next wave of global AI development.
