Analysts: Trump's tariffs on other countries are not expected to jump to 50% like Brazil
According to online reports, Trump said that the latest tariff rate is calculated based on common sense, trade deficits and the treatment the United States has received over the years. But the letter to Brazil suggests that Trump also views tariffs as a tool to influence foreign policies with which he disagrees. An optimistic interpretation is that Brazil's tariffs are of little significance to the tariff setting of other countries. Owen Tedford, senior analyst at Beacon Policy Advisors, said the August 1 deadline gave Brazil an opportunity to negotiate a tax. He (Trump) is trying to do what he thinks will help his friend (former Brazilian President Bolsonaro). This is largely one-off, and I don't think other countries 'tariffs will jump from 10% on April 2 to 50%.
